Conduct
Unprofessional conduct which discredits the individual or ACAS will be subject to termination. Students must conduct themselves so they do not interfere with other students or the instructor. The administration of ACAS reserves the right to terminate a student on any of the following grounds:
  • Non-compliance with ACAS rules and regulations.
  • Conduct that reflects unfavorably upon ACAS or its students.
  • Unsatisfactory academic progress.
  • Excessive absences
  • Failure to pay fees when due.
  • Cheating.
  • Falsifying records.
  • Breach of institution enrollment agreement.
  • Failure to abide by the rules and regulations of workshop sites.
  • Poor health.
  • Entering a workshop site while under the influence or effects of alcohol, drugs, or narcotics of any kind.
  • Carrying a concealed or potentially dangerous weapon at a workshop site.
  • Sexual harassment.
  • Harassment of any kind including intimidation and discrimination.

A student dismissed for unsatisfactory progress may be re-admitted into the program only at the discretion of the institution Dean.

Dress Code
At workshops students are expected to work closely with animals. For that reason we suggest sturdy shoes and long pants.

Drug free Institution and Workplace
ACAS has a zero tolerance for illegal drugs and alcohol or legal drugs that may impair an individual's ability to work with an animal, machinery, equipment or other required item or duty. No student, instructor, or employee may be on the institution premises or workshop site under the influence of any illegal or alcoholic substance. As a drug free and alcohol free environment, individuals under the influence may be subject to immediate dismissal and/or removal. Students may request counseling for substance abuse and will be referred to community resources.

No smoking Institution and Workplace
Smoking will not be tolerated within 50 yards of the administrative offices or workshop site.

Sexual harassment and anti hazing policy
ACAS is committed to maintaining an environment free of objectionable and disrespectful conduct and communication. The school rigorously adheres to Title VII of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 for all protected classifications including race, color, creed, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, and status in regard to public assistance. Harassment, intimidation of staff or students, or allowing suggestions to be made that sexual favors may have an effect on status will not be tolerated by ACAS.

If an employee or student becomes aware of any discriminatory behavior or activity that might be considered harassment, it becomes the responsibility of that person to report such conduct. a. Staff members should notify their immediate supervisor and/or the Senior Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. b. Students should notify the Dean of Students.

Sexual harassment is defined by law and includes any unwanted sexual gesture, physical contact, or statement that is offensive, humiliating, or an interference with required tasks or career opportunities at the university. Sexual harassment is prohibited under federal and state discrimination laws and the regulations of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when:

    a. Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual's employment or education;
    b. Submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for the employment or academic decisions affecting such individual; or
    c. Such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual's work or academic or professional performance or creating an intimidating hostile or offensive working or educational environment.

Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against any employee who violates this policy against sexual harassment. Based on the seriousness of the offense, disciplinary action may include verbal or written reprimand, suspension, or termination

Retaliatory action against anyone filing a complaint of any type of discrimination, including sexual harassment, will not be tolerated. The designee of the President, while attempting to investigate and mediate any sexual harassment claim, may establish safeguards against retaliation as deemed necessary.

Hazing Policy State of Florida Hazing law: Section 240.1325 of the Florida Statutes
ACAS complies with Florida State Law prohibiting hazing. The definition of "hazing" means any action or situation that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with any organization operating under the sanction of a postsecondary institution. Such term includes, but is not limited to, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other substance, or other forced physical activity which could adversely affect the physical health or safety of the student, and also includes any activity which would subject the student to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which could result in extreme embarrassment, or other forced activity that could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the student. Hazing is not allowed even with student consent. Any individual student or group of students found guilty of such violation will receive disciplinary probation, suspension, dismissal, expulsion or any combination of such penalties, depending upon the circumstances and the severity of the individual case.

After it has been determined that a student or employee of ACAS has participated in disruptive activities, the following penalties may be imposed against such person:

    (a) Immediate termination of contract of such employee;
    (b) Immediate expulsion of such student from the institution of higher learning for a minimum of 2 years.

It shall be considered a violation of this policy for any ACAS employee, faculty member, or student to abuse another through harassing conduct or communication. Whenever such misconduct exists, the supervisor or other appropriate person is required to take prompt and corrective action consistent with the discipline provisions of the appropriate policy.

Unresolved disputes
Students are expected to address any disagreements or conflict directly with the individual involved in person with a written document outlining the complaint and communication. After this, if there is no satisfactory resolution, the student may set an appointment by phone to see the institution director. All communications regarding the complaint must be in writing and all meetings and communications will be documented in the student file. Every attempt at a satisfactory resolution will be made. If the complaint cannot be resolved after exhausting the institution's grievance procedure, the student may contact the Commission for Independent Education.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to address any disagreements or conflict directly with the individual involved. After this, if there is no satisfactory resolution, the individual may set an appointment by phone to see the institution director and then the corporate officers. This must be documented in writing via mail, fax, or email. All communications regarding the complaint must be in writing and all meetings and communications will be documented in the employee file. Every attempt at a satisfactory resolution will be made.

Filing a complaint
If you are or were a student or an employee of the American College of Applied Science and you believe that the school, or anyone representing the school, has acted unlawfully, you have a right to file a complaint.

All students' complaints should first be directed in writing to the instructor. If the student is not satisfied with the outcome, the complaint should be filed in writing to the Dean of Students. If the student is not satisfied with the outcome, the complaint should be filed in writing to the Dean of School of Companion Animal Science.

If the student is not satisfied with the outcome, the complaint should be filed in writing to the Senior Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

You may make complaints about the conduct of the school; advertising; standards and methods of instruction; equipment; facilities; qualifications of teaching and management personnel; enrollment agreement; methods of collecting tuition and other charges; school license or registration; school and student records and private school agents. The steps you must take to file a complaint are:

Request an interview for the purpose of filing a written complaint. Bring all relevant documents with you to the interview, including an enrollment agreement, financial aid application, transcripts, etc.

2. If you cannot come for an interview, send a letter or call the office to request a complaint form. You must complete and sign this form and mail it to the office. Please include with it copies of all relevant documents. You should keep the originals. You must file a complaint within two years after the alleged illegal conduct took place. The Institute cannot investigate any complaint more than two years after the date of the occurrence.

3. The Institute will attempt to resolve the complaint as quickly as possible and may contact you in the future with follow-up questions. You should provide all information requested as quickly as possible; delay may affect the investigation of your complaint.
