Academic Information and Standards of Progress:

Syllabi
Students receive a syllabus at the beginning of each course that outlines requirements for successful course completion.

Attendance
Courses are offered on line on a term basis. This means that students enrolled in a specific course start and end at the same time.

Absences

Leave of Absence
Students may request a Leave of Absence (LOA) by contacting the Dean of the school and specifying the date of the leave. The student may seek re-entrance in the next term that the course is offered. The student has one year from the leave date to re-enter. Currently enrolled students who are granted an approved Leave of Absence (LOA) may hold any balance in his/her account to be applied toward future tuition only for a period of one year from date of issue. Any funds on account that remain after one year from date of issue are non-refundable. Students may also withdraw prior to the one year deadline and request a refund according to the refund policy and based on the last date of classroom attendance.

Make up Work
Two basic rules apply to all excused absences, whether excused because of an ACAS policy or at the instructor's discretion.

(1) Students must still meet all class requirements.
(2) Instructors must offer reasonable assistance in making up missed work. Examples include making arrangements for attendance at labs or discussion sessions that meet at other times or providing makeup exams or labs where feasible.

ACAS will allow makeup work when a student has complied with ACAS' requirements for notification regarding absences. Absences include valid excuses for missing class, including personal or family illness or death, personal problems or unforeseen circumstances..

1. Instructors have the right to require written verification of students' absences.
2. Instructors have to use their best judgment in evaluating student excuses. Where students or family members notify the Senior Academic Adviser's Office of extended absences, the Senior Academic Adviser will notify instructors

Probation

Masters Level
Each Masters student is required to maintain a 3.0 grade point average for all Masters level courses taken since enrollment in the degree program.

A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below a "B" (3.0) upon or after the completion of nine credit hours of Masters level courses will be automatically placed on academic probation by the Graduate School for the following full quarter.

A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below a "B" (3.0) for a second consecutive semester of enrollment must seek advising in order to correct the academic deficiency during the next quarter of enrollment.

A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below a "B" (3.0) average for three consecutive quarters of enrollment will not be permitted to re-enroll and will have his or her admissions status terminated. To avoid termination, the student's masters program must present compelling-- i.e., extenuating reasons for continuance. The request for continuance must be approved by the Dean.

Whenever a graduate student is placed on academic probation, both the graduate student and the graduate director of that students program will be notified. In addition to the minimum grade point average requirements, Masters programs may require Masters students to maintain certain performance minima in their programs of study, and in all or in particular courses.

A student who fails to make satisfactory progress in meeting some or all programmatic requirements, or who fails to demonstrate the ability to succeed in his or her course of studies or research, may have their enrollment terminated. Determinations concerning such matters occur at the Masters program level.

Bachelors, Diploma, and Continuing Education
1. A student who has attempted 12 or more credit hours at ACAS will be placed on probation if the student's cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0. The student will remain on probation until the cumulative grade point average reaches at least 2.0.

2. If a student who is on probation fails to achieve a 2.0 grade point average in any regular quarter of enrollment, the student will be automatically suspended from the college for one quarter. The student may appeal the automatic suspension in writing to the Dean. Readmission to ACAS on probation after the first suspension will be automatic.

3. A readmitted probationary student who fails to achieve a 2.0 grade point average in any one quarter of enrollment will be subject to dismissal from the college for longer periods of time at the discretion of the faculty. Readmission of students who have been suspended or dismissed more than once from ACAS will be subject to the approval of the Dean.

4. Any student whose quarter grade point average is below 2.0 will receive a letter of warning from the Dean describing the policies on probation and discussing potential dismissal from ACAS. To avoid termination, the student must present compelling-- i.e., extenuating reasons for continuance.

Re-entry

Returning/Reentry to the College

A student who has been absent from the American College of Applied Science less than 12 months may be admitted as a returning student. If more than 12 months have elapsed, a student must apply for reentry to the College.

Absences of One Calendar Year or Longer

Returning Students
Students planning to return to American College of Applied Science after an absence of less than 12 months do not complete a reentry form. Returning students should contact the Office of the Registrar to have their records updated.

Reentry Students
Students who plan to attend the American College of Applied Science after an absence of twelve months or more must complete a reentry form. The reentry form should be completed and returned to the Office of Admissions in advance of the quarter of reentry.

Students who have attended another college since enrollment at the American College of Applied Science must have an official transcript(s) of all course work attempted sent to the Office of Admissions. Reentry must be approved prior to registration.

Reentry Approval Process
Generally, a request to reenter the American College of Applied Science will be approved within the Office of the Registrar. However, the Office of the Registrar will refer the reentry form to the Dean of the school to which a student plans to return if the student:

(a) desires to change curriculum; (b) has a previous American College of Applied Science cumulative grade point average below 2.00 or had a last quarter average below 2.00; (c) was dropped from the College for unsatisfactory academic progress or was not otherwise in good standing; or (d) since leaving the American College of Applied Science, has completed additional college study with less than a 2.00 grade point average.

Students who have been dropped from enrollment at the American College of Applied Science must obtain reinstatement by the Dean of the school into which they plan to return. The following policies apply: 1. Students may not be reinstated until at least one quarter has elapsed since they were academically dismissed.

2. Students who have been dismissed from enrollment two or more times are not eligible for reinstatement until at least two academic quarters have elapsed since their last academic dismissal.

5. Reinstated students will return based on the College probationary policies.

Graduation

Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates
Upon the successful completion of a program and the payment of all required tuition and fees, students will receive, via postal mail, a certificate of completion, diploma, or degree from ACAS.
